Ultimate Kilimanjaro Packing List 2026
Complete Kilimanjaro Packing Guide
After guiding thousands to summit, VISIT KILI ADVENTURES has perfected the ultimate packing list. This guide covers everything you need (and don't need) for successful climb.
Packing Principles
- Layer, don't bulk: Multiple thin layers beat one thick jacket
- Quality over quantity: Invest in good base layers and boots
- Rent heavy items: Sleeping bags and poles available in Moshi
- Pack light: Porters carry main duffel, you carry daypack only
- Test everything: Break in boots before departure
Essential Clothing
Base Layers (Moisture-Wicking)
- 2-3 synthetic or merino wool base layer tops (long sleeve)
- 2 base layer bottoms (long johns)
- 4-5 pairs hiking socks (wool/synthetic, NO cotton!)
- 4-5 pairs underwear
VISIT KILI ADVENTURES tip: Merino wool best but expensive. Quality synthetic works fine and dries faster.
Mid Layers (Insulation)
- 2 fleece jackets (one light, one heavier)
- 1 insulated jacket (down or synthetic)
- 1-2 long-sleeve hiking shirts
- 2 pairs hiking pants (zip-off ideal)
- 1 pair thermal tights
Outer Layers (Weather Protection)
- 1 waterproof rain jacket (MUST be waterproof!)
- 1 waterproof rain pants
- 1 warm insulated parka (-20°C rated minimum)
- 1 pair insulated pants (for summit night)
Extremities
- 1 warm beanie/winter hat
- 1 sun hat with brim
- 1 balaclava or neck gaiter
- 2 pairs warm gloves (liner + insulated)
- 1 pair waterproof mittens (for summit)
- Quality hiking boots (broken in!)
- Camp shoes/sandals
- Gaiters (highly recommended)
Boot advice: Your boots are MOST important item! Must be waterproof, broken in (wear 50+ km before trip), ankle support, insulated. Blisters ruin climbs!
