Day-by-Day Itinerary
Begin at Machame Gate (1,800m). Trek through lush rainforest filled with blue monkeys and exotic birds. Arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m). Elevation gain: 1,200m. Distance: 11km. Duration: 5-7 hours.
Leave rainforest, enter moorland zone. Cross Shira Plateau with spectacular Kibo Peak views. Camp at Shira (3,840m). Elevation gain: 840m. Distance: 5km. Duration: 4-6 hours.
Critical acclimatization day. Trek to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m). Elevation gain: 120m net. Distance: 10km. Duration: 6-8 hours.
Scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. Continue across ridges with glacier views. Camp at Karanga (4,035m). Elevation gain: 75m. Distance: 5km. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Trek to Barafu Base Camp (4,640m). Arrive afternoon, rest before summit. Elevation gain: 605m. Distance: 4km. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Start midnight. Reach Stella Point at sunrise, final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)! Descend to Mweka Camp (3,080m). Elevation gain: 1,255m, loss: 2,815m. Distance: 17km. Duration: 12-16 hours.
Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Receive summit certificates. Transfer to Moshi hotel. Elevation loss: 1,440m. Distance: 10km. Duration: 3-5 hours.
