Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Londorossi Gate (2,100m). Trek through pristine forest. Wildlife viewing opportunities. Camp at Mti Mkubwa (2,750m). Elevation gain: 650m. Distance: 7km. Duration: 3-4 hours.
Enter heath zone. Gradual climb across Shira Plateau. Stunning Kibo views. Camp at Shira 1 (3,500m). Elevation gain: 750m. Distance: 8km. Duration: 5-6 hours.
Gentle walk across Shira Plateau. Optional Shira Cathedral hike. Camp at Shira 2 (3,850m). Elevation gain: 350m. Distance: 7km. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Key acclimatization day. Climb to Lava Tower (4,630m), descend to Barranco (3,960m). Elevation gain: 110m net. Distance: 10km. Duration: 6-8 hours.
Scramble Great Barranco Wall. Cross ridges with glacier views. Camp Karanga (4,035m). Elevation gain: 75m. Distance: 5km. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Trek to Barafu Base Camp (4,640m). Rest before summit night. Elevation gain: 605m. Distance: 4km. Duration: 4-5 hours.
Midnight start. Stella Point at sunrise. Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m)! Descend to Mweka (3,080m). Elevation gain: 1,255m, loss: 2,815m. Distance: 17km. Duration: 12-16 hours.
Final rainforest descent to Mweka Gate (1,640m). Summit certificates. Hotel transfer. Elevation loss: 1,440m. Distance: 10km. Duration: 3-5 hours.
